Fearless Christianity on a College Campus

Fearless Christianity on a College Campus – Is It Possible?

Take heart friends; it is very possible.

Fearless Christianity is still alive, even in public universities.

courageous Christian studentsThe fact is, there are many courageous students willing to stand up for their faith in Christ. You probably won’t hear about them, but they are there.

I believe they deserve a lot of support. It’s not always easy for them. Sometimes they’re faced with ridicule from a non-believing friend and sometimes the taunting and intimidation takes place in a classroom in front of an atheistic professor.

A Question for Christian Parents

If they’re asked, will your college students respectfully defend their faith or, will they deny God’s existence just to take the pressure off?

David Kupelian’s bestseller, The Marketing of Evil, is a great book to add to your library. It provides numerous citations that prove the disturbing anti-God agenda that is infecting college campuses and society as a whole. No doubt, it’s getting more difficult for students to express their faith in a university setting. Anti-God school administrations and professors have permeated academia. Sometimes the assault against a student’s freedom and protection can reach disturbing levels as outlined in this Alliance Defending Freedom article. Keep reading to the end of the story and you’ll see what I mean.

Be Prepared

The liberal coercion is only going to get worse. We shouldn’t be surprised. The Bible teaches us to expect attacks on our faith.

Have you prepared your college-bound students for these challenges? Along with dorm arrangements, clothing, and college spending money, have you taught them how to respond to an angry atheist, maybe even an authority figure, who is badgering them for their faith in God? Sadly, many churches have failed their congregations by ignoring the headlines of Christian persecution in America.

Parents, it’s most likely up to you. It’s time churches (and you) start getting prepared. The day before college orientation is a little too late. The front line of spiritual warfare includes our nation’s schools and universities – right there in the heart of free-thinking, godless humanism. I’m just not ready to believe that the battle for the hearts and minds of our nation’s youth is over yet.

Fearless Christianity and defending the faithHow can young adults respond to attacks?

If a student is facing a nonviolent verbal attack, they should always respond with honor, faith, kindness, respect, compassion for the lost, and the historical facts that prove the Word of God. If, however, someone physically harasses them – spitting, pushing, or otherwise, they should leave the area as quickly as possible and report it to the proper authorities. Their written report of the incident may become valuable later on.

The Study of Bible Prophesy is Very Rewarding

I’ve been studying Christian Apologetics for years now, and there’s still much we can all learn. Even so, the study of the Bible is the most rewarding, fulfilling, and life-confirming homework I’ve ever done in my life. It’s confounding to me how people won’t accept that what’s happening in much of our world (the growing deception) is prophesied right there in the pages of the Bible.

Is there good news? A resounding “Yes!” The good news (and what I take great comfort in) is that we know how it all ends. Believers in the saving grace of Jesus Christ will spend eternity with Him in heaven and on the new earth. Our human minds can’t even imagine the loveliness of the eternal home that Christ is preparing for us. (John 14:23-25.)

Where can you go to learn more about standing up for your faith?

Dont give up on defending your faithFor starters, there’s one helpful online resource called Stand To Reason. Several excellent Christian scholars on the site have written informative articles and created constructive podcasts to help equip your family members to defend their faith. If you click on the menu at the top of the website where it says “Explore,” you’ll be taken to a page where you can choose various topics such as Apologetics and Bio-ethics. A second helpful resource is The Poached Egg.  You can look up “categories” of topics on the right-hand page of the website.

Prayer is First and Foremost

spiritual battle in our nations schoolsWe need prayer to cover every aspect of our lives – from voting for America’s political leaders (that means a “No” to socialist candidates), to protecting our homes, and picking the right schools for our kids.

Spiritual revivals have happened in this country before, and they can happen again.

I’m holding out hope, but God’s will be done.

Should you only consider sending your child to a Christian college?

That’s certainly an option. There are excellent Christian universities for parents to choose from. Point Loma University in San Diego and Liberty University in Virginia are a couple off the top of my head. You can also search “Christian universities” on the internet and come up with a list.  But, what if parents don’t have the option to send their high school graduate to a Christian college? There is reason for concern, but all is not lost.

College christianI wanted to dig deeper. So, I reached out to a college friend of mine. Cassius is a 23-year-old junior at a public university. I wanted to find out how he keeps the faith while facing the immense pressures of college life. His answers may surprise you. I know I was encouraged to hear them.

Cassius – Do you feel that Christian students need to specifically attend a Christian college?

In my opinion, it depends on the individual. I would encourage young adult Christians to consider going to a secular university, so he/she can help make a bigger impact in the school; considering where America is heading. I was offered the opportunity to go to Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, but I turned it down because I wanted to make the most impact wherever the Lord called me to.

Since I started at a secular university, Jesus has used me to start prayer meetings, Bible studies, and teachings on discipleship. I have boldly shared my faith and I was even given the chance to talk in class about Christian topics that are not usually talked about. I believe that I wouldn’t have had such an impact if I was going to a Christian school. Lastly, a young Christian can look for ways to get plugged in at public universities in Christian ministries such as BSM or Paradigm.

Support from college friendsCassius makes a great point there.

Why not encourage your college freshman to get involved in a Christian ministry from the get-go and he or she will have immediate support from fellow Christians on campus.

Staunch support from home can also make a world of difference. If students run into a concerning attack on their faith, they need to have point persons they can call – their parents, a pastor or youth pastor from home, or from a Bible-believing church near their school.

The Peer Pressure in College Can Be Overwhelming at Times

Out of control parties and drinking, the lack of a curfew, the list goes on. With unrestricted freedom, comes a lot of temptations.

Cassius – What are some of the big challenges you face as a young college student?

Some of the challenges I face at a secular university is that often I get made fun of for my Christian beliefs. Beliefs such as waiting to have sex until marriage, abstaining from looking lustfully at a woman, and loving my neighbor as myself. Peer pressure is at its highest throughout the college years. Those are the times a Christian needs to cling to the Cross the most. I overcome these issues by surrounding myself with my brothers in Christ who hold me accountable. I read the Bible and try to seek the Kingdom first in all that I do. I turn away from pornography and/or the pressures of being in a relationship by keeping busy with school and the ministry that God has called me to.

Do you feel a lot of pressure to deny your faith or values?

One of the pressures I face is to know when to withdraw from my non-Christian friends and when to stay and encourage. For example, I have a friend who uses vulgar language. I often think about how I can encourage him by the way that I live so it will make him question his unbelief in the God I love and worship.

What About The Future of Fearless Christianity?

Are you worried about the future of our country or do you see a chance for a spiritual revival in America?

As a Christian, I do see our country drifting further and further away from God each day. It worries me, because eventually I’ll have to raise my kids in a wicked society that says everything that’s right is wrong and vice versa.

Am I scared of the future? No. I believe this is the time for the church to rise and fight like never before. But, before Christians can do that, we must fall on our knees. A revival starts with the person wanting to start it first. I can pray all I want, but if it’s not backed up by actions, than it’s dead. The Bible says that faith without works is dead. Also, we’re called as Christians to make disciples all across the world, why not start down the street?

Falling on our knees with fearless Christianity

Cassius – Do Christians speak up enough?

I’ve noticed there are a lot of people willing to serve and share the love of Christ. That is amazing. However, the younger generation is not entirely the problem. If you look at the Church as a whole most Christians do not or have not shared their faith. If Christians will live boldly for Christ, an opportunity will present itself, perhaps an unbeliever questioning why Christians work so hard. Then, in that moment, the believer can share the gospel and tell the unbeliever about Jesus.

Is there any particular Christian ministry that excites you and why?

There’s a Christian organization on campus called “Phos”. Phos is greek for “light.” Jesus says that we [Christians] are the light of the world. Being involved in this organization gets me pumped because our main purpose is to teach new and old believers how to study the Bible through observation, interpretation, and application. We challenge those who show up to go and share what they’ve been taught. One of the main things I love about Phos is that we don’t care about the numbers. Our mission is “one soul at a time,” meaning sharing the gospel until there’s no place left. Phos is all about fellowship and studying the Bible, so that all who attend may have a better understanding of who Jesus is.

When talking with people, younger than yourself, how can you encourage them to live for Christ, even under the threat of persecution or nasty comments from others?

I would just encourage younger Christians to get involved in a local church, get plugged into a community group, and constantly meditate on God’s word day and night.

Thank you Cassius!

I found his answers very encouraging, didn’t you?

I also thank God for the Christian ministries that are still on public college campuses. Their mission isn’t easy in a sometimes hostile environment, but the Bible tells us we must persevere and withstand every test.

Friends, keep looking up!

God’s Not Dead 2, My Take

My Take On The Movie God’s Not Dead 2

April 1st marked the nationwide opening of the movie Gods Not Dead 2.

Have you seen it yet? If not, I want to encourage you to check it out.

The movie God's Not Dead 2My husband and I went with some friends, and we all enjoyed it.

You never know if the sequel to a successful movie will be better than the first. I’m happy to say that the new one is my favorite of the two.

Admittedly, it’s better to see Part 1 first. It’s not a requirement, but just better. That way, you’ll understand the references to some of the situations and character involvement in the first movie. Even so, this sequel stands on its own, and its message is vital in today’s world.

Would we, could we, stand up for our faith, even if doing so threatens our job and some of our relationships?

The movie is a very realistic story of ordinary people finding their faith and, in some instances, defending their faith and supporting each other through the resulting challenges.

Realistic Movie Plot

God’s Not Dead 2 follows a similar plot line to the first movie in that the main character faces a significant degree of persecution for his/her Christian beliefs, with potentially devastating consequences.

The story takes place once again in Hope Springs – this time, at Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial High School.

A popular history teacher, Grace Wesley (well-played by Melissa Joan Hart), raises controversy in the classroom when she answers a straightforward question from one of her students about Jesus Christ. Next thing you know, Wesley is called before school administrators and legal advisors to face disciplinary action. She has an opportunity to recant and get her job back. Otherwise, she stands to lose everything if she refuses.

Church and state separation concept

Would you agree to deny the existence of God just to save your job?

Ms. Wesley bravely declines, and the courtroom battle begins. Her attorney is portrayed by the talented Jesse Metcalfe. I enjoyed watching him transform from a bottom-of-the-totem-pole attorney to resourceful counsel in a surprising twist during the jury trial.

All Star Cast

The all-star cast includes Sadie Robertson (of Duck Dynasty) and Robin Givens, who plays the school’s principal. A couple of scenes with the Newsboys were a welcome addition to the film.

Separation of church and state is the primary topic of the legal proceedings. The actual concept of “separation” has an origin that you don’t usually hear about in current debates.

Here’s an interesting and timely scene from the movie which mentions the very real challenge that some Houston pastors faced in 2014 when city government officials demanded that they turn over their sermons.

As Christians going forward in our hostile world, we could lose some of the people in our lives who are offended by our faith. It’s the nature of being around unsaved friends and family members who may block us on social media or turn completely away. Remember, even Jesus’ family members at one point questioned His sanity. We can expect challenges ahead.

God’s Not Dead 2 runs about 2 hours. You may want to take your whole family, but please note, a sizable portion of the film focuses on the courtroom drama so younger kids may get lost in a sea of legalese.

We Must Be Aware of What’s Going On

I highly recommend the movie God’s Not Dead 2 because there’s a growing and concentrated effort to force Christians to defend their faith under intimidation, face ridicule, or worse. We need to be aware. There’s no hiding our heads in the sand. It appears that, no matter what reasons Christians provide for their belief in the saving grace of Jesus Christ, it’s not sound enough for belligerent atheists. The fact is, God is the Author of Light and for those unbelievers who remain unsaved, they will never have eternal life with Him. (2 Cor. 4:3-6).

Stand With God and Expect to be Judged by the World

On a side note, I checked out the reviews of some secular critics. Granted, we all know that no movie is perfect. As I expected, I found it interesting that one of the movies loved by these critics, a film full of profanity and nudity throughout, was highly rated. So, I give little credence to their “paranoia”, “religious nut” assessments of a faith-based film such as this one. These critics are choosing to ignore documented headlines of Christian persecution worldwide and here in America. Watch the list of documented court cases shown during the movie’s credits and you’ll see what I mean. Do these secular critics unquestionably think there’s no Christian persecution simply because the mainstream media doesn’t report it on the nightly news? Certainly seems so.

Please note: there’s an additional scene that you’ll want to stay for at the end of all the credits.

Delight In God With Cana’s Voice

Delight In God With Cana’s Voice – Christian Recording Artists

What happens when three award-winning Christian vocalists decide to combine their talents into an impressive powerhouse trio – you get Cana’s Voice!

I’ve mentioned this before, but I love all types of Christian Music. When I hear great musicians perform, I can’t wait to add their music to my iPod.

Cana's Voice Sounds of Joy tourThis past Saturday, my husband and I attended the “Sounds of Joy” tour at our church. Cana’s Voice, piano virtuoso Stan Whitmire, and talented vocalist/comedian Mark Lowry delighted the crowd with their passionate performances.

I could have easily renamed the concert “An Evening of Joy”.

Talk about uplifting. I walked out of church singing.

Captivating Harmonies

I’d never heard Cana’s Voice before. Each individual member of Cana’s Voice – Taranda Greene, Doug Anderson of Ernie Haass and Signature Sound, and Jody McBrayer formerly of Avalon, are talented artists in their own right. I could list all of the awards and nominations they’ve won as recording artists since they started sharing their voices with the world, but this blog post would then be very, very long. 🙂

I was thrilled when they sang one of my all-time favorites, “Jesus Never Fails.” I’ve sung it in choirs before and this heavenly song gives me goosebumps every time.

Close your eyes and listen. Let the beautiful harmonies and words sink into your soul. I’m sure you’ll be blessed by it as much as I am.

Have you ever sung a song in church and found yourself shedding a few tears because it’s so powerful and beautiful? I have.

It’s no wonder that TaRanda wiped away some tears while singing this song. I felt it too just being in the audience. When you simply let go and lose yourself in a love song to God, something amazing happens. Let the words of praise and lovely melodies fill every part of you and you can experience a lot of peace.

I was able to buy the limited pre-release of the Cana’s Voice CD at the concert. There are seven songs on the CD. It will be available in music retail outlets in late May of this year. I have a feeling it will be a success. How could it not?

For more information about the “Sounds of Joy” tour with Cana’s Voice, you can click their social media here:

Saturday Night Live Sunk to a New Low

I can’t say I’m surprised, but Saturday Night Live sunk to a new low. I tuned into it for about five minutes recently and was disgusted. Saturday Night Live Sunk to a New Low

I’m not a fan of the show. In fact, I haven’t watched SNL for years. I started turning it off it after Dana Carvey left.

I understand that the writers want the show to be controversial. They want to get people talking about it the next day around the water cooler. I used to work in media. I get it. But, that show has taken crass humor to a new level. It’s not just SNL that crosses the line either.

Let me start by saying how this offensive episode even ended up on my screen. It was Saturday evening late. My husband and I were switching through the channels before getting ready for bed. On a whim, I tuned into SNL for the first time in many years.

Big mistake.

Big.

Huge.

In their offensive skit, which was a take-off of the brainless “Bachelor” TV series, they had women lining up to be the guy’s love interest, just like in the real TV show. One of the candidates said something so offensive (a reference to incest with her father) that I felt like throwing up right then and there.

When did Sexual Molestation Become Fodder for Jokes?

I couldn’t turn the channel fast enough. And then I remembered that I saw a promo once for the old show, “The Royals.” That commercial also made a joking reference to incest. Apparently, this is becoming more commonplace.

That is sick, people.

SNL sunk to a new lowAnd yet, we’re supposed to listen to these celebrities when they dictate to us about how we’re to live our lives, how to vote, how to worship (if at all), and what we’re to tolerate and not tolerate.

No thanks.

I’m on a team already. I choose my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. That means when I find anything offensive I have the right to speak up or speak out against it.

Christians Do Have a Say

(1) We have the right to turn junk off in our homes. If your kiddos don’t like it, too bad. They’ll appreciate it someday. Why give those offensive TV shows the ratings? It just encourages the writers to get more and more offensive. If this is the kind of junk they’re joking about now on television, wait and see what happens next year.

(2) We have the right to get up and leave if we’re away from home and this kind of junk is on a TV screen in a store. We have the right to ask the managers of those businesses to turn the channel or station to family-friendly TV. All they can say is no. At least, we’re doing the right thing.

(3) We can write the sponsors of these shows. We can boycott a product or store that promotes anti-God or anti-family values. Why not?

Speak Up, Friends, Gently and Respectfully

I had to do that once at a hair salon. A loud song was playing in the background and the lyrics, which were degrading to women, were blaring in my ear. I asked the stylist to please change the station. She was happy to oblige.

rate of sexual crimesThe rate of sexual crimes in the U.S. is at an all-time high. Women and children (boys and girls) are being raped and, in some cases, murdered. It seems we’re just to laugh it off because the Hollywood machine says to make light of a tragic situation such as incest?

This world is not my home.

I am praying for America, and that Christians can turn back this awful direction our country is moving in. We can expect the anti-God people to shout us down. Let them. They need serious prayer. Sadly, if they don’t turn to God, they’re in for an eternity apart from Him. There is nothing worse. Our God is a just God. Why would we expect anything less?

If people can’t see this growing divide between darkness and light, they need to get their eyes checked and wake up to the grim reality that Satan is of this world.
The coming months are uncertain, but this I do know: Praise the Lord because the ultimate victory is ours.
